What is Bungeecord?

There is a lot of talk about it, big servers use it but what is it, BungeeCord?

BungeeCord or short Bungee is a way to connect different Minecraft servers.
On a BungeeCord server itself no Minecraft can be played, the BungeeCord server only refers players to other servers and allows them to switch between these servers.
In large networks, this is used to link different mini-games or game modes.
So it seems like you are on one server while you are actually being referred from one server to another.
